Paeoniflorin

Paeoniflorin, whose brute or molecular formula is: C23H28O11, is a chemical compound of natural origin and is one of the main constituents of herbal medicines derived from Chinese peony (Paeonia lactiflora Pall.) But can be extracted from other plants such as giant salvinia (Salvinia adnata Desv.).
Paeoniflorin, as well as peony extract, exert a muscle relaxant activity on smooth muscles (Hikino 1985), reinforced by licorice.
Paeoniflorin also has antiandrogenic properties.
In Peony, it can form new compounds with the addition of phenolic substituents.
In a study in female rats, paeoniflorine was found to inhibit testosterone production within the ovaries by promoting aromatase activity. Binds to glucocorticoid receptors but not to progesterone receptors (Takeuchi et al 1991; Tamaya, Sato, Okada 1986)

In mice, paeoniflorin was shown to protect against neuroinflammation and depression-like behavior induced by IFN alpha.
Using the aqueous extract of peony inhibits the convulsive activity of pentylenetetrazole in isolated neuronal tissue, with the more active compounds albiflorine and gallotannin (Sugaya et al 1991).
The extract inhibits nine types of pathogenic bacteria and increases the phagocytic activity of macrophages, and increases the number of T lymphocytes (Liang et al. 1989)
Furthermore, paeoniflorin inhibits platelet aggregation, increases fibrinolytic activity and increases prothrombin time.
Further studies are being carried out to evaluate the full potential of this substance.
