Myricitrin, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 5,7-dihydroxy-3 – {[(2S, 3R, 4R, 5R, 6S) -3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-methyloxan-2-yl] oxy} -2- (3,4,5- trihydroxyphenyl) -4H-1-benzopyran-4-one, is a naturally occurring glycoside.
Myricitrin has a brute or molecular formula: C21H20O12 and is the 3-O-α-L-ramnopyranoside of myricetin.
The term myricitrin derives from the composition of the two names of miri (ca) and (quer) citrina.
This substance can be extracted from some plants such as: Polygonum aviculare L., 1753, Myrica cerifera L., Nymphaea lotus L. and others.
Myricitrin is a substance that is used by several species of beetles in their communication system.
These include: Plagioderma versicolora, Agelastica coerulea, Atrachya menetrisi, Japanese Altica, Altica oleracea, Gastrolina depressa.
From the point of view of its possible medical uses, myricitrin is an inhibitor of nitric oxide and protein kinase C and shows effects similar to antipsychotics and anxiolytics respectively in psychosis and anxiety behaviors in animal experiments.
