Patchoulol or patchouli alcohol, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: (1R,4S,4aS,6R,8aS)-4,8a,9,9-Tetramethyldecahydro-1,6-methanonaphthalen-1-ol is an alcohol sesquiterpenic present in patchouli.
Patchouli oil is an important substance in perfumery. The (-)-optic isomer is one of the organic compounds responsible for the typical patchouli scent. Patchoulol is also used in the synthesis of the chemotherapy drug Taxol.
Patchoulol has a brute or molecular formula: C15H26O.
This substance was first isolated in 1869 by Gal and its chemical composition was subsequently correctly formulated, as it is known today, by Montgolfier.
