2030 Agenda – Goal 16

2030 Agenda – Goal 16

Promote peaceful and inclusive societies oriented towards sustainable development, guarantee access to justice for all and build effective, responsible and inclusive institutions at all levels

Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda program aims to achieve peaceful and inclusive societies by 2030. To achieve this goal, Goal 16 calls for the reduction of all forms of violence, stop torture and fight all forms of organized crime. Furthermore, corruption and illegal flows of weapons and money will need to be sharply reduced. To achieve the goal of peaceful and inclusive societies, the rule of law and the strengthening of participatory institutions must be promoted and equal opportunities in access to justice must be guaranteed.
A different model of policies and societies that make inclusiveness and peace the principles of good governance is fundamental. States affected by conflicts are in fact the furthest away from achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). By contrast, in many other countries, the restoration of peace and the creation of effective institutions have contributed significantly to achieving the MDGs.
16.1: Significantly reduce all forms of violence and the associated mortality rate everywhere.
16.2: End the abuse, exploitation, trafficking of children and all forms of violence and torture against them.
16.3: Promote the rule of law nationally and internationally and ensure equal access to justice for all.
16.4: By 2030, significantly reduce illicit financing and arms trafficking, enhance the recovery and return of stolen assets and fight all forms of organized crime.

16.5: Significantly reduce corruption and abuse of power in all their forms.
16.6: Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels.
16.7: Guarantee a responsible decision-making process, open to all, participatory and representative at all levels.
16.8: Enlarge and strengthen the participation of developing countries in global governance institutions.
16.9: By 2030, provide legal identity for all, including birth registration.
16.10: Ensure public access to information and protect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with national legislation and international agreements.
16.a: Consolidate the most important national institutions, including through international cooperation, to develop at all levels, particularly in developing countries, capacities to prevent violence and to combat terrorism and crime.
16.b: Promote and enforce non-discriminatory laws and sustainable development policies.
The conditions of peace are however determined by a renewed sovereignty of the individual countries with regard to their own resources and their characteristic development.
