Vegetational bands

Vegetational bands

The vegetational bands are altimetric areas which, region by region, are characterized by the presence of typical floristic formations.
The vegetational bands are related to climatic diagrams or diagrams, which are representations of the basic climatic parameters, which typically are the average temperature and rainfall in a given location.
Chymograms are used to quickly and concisely represent the climate of a given location providing a clear and precise picture, easy to understand even for non-experts in the sector.
The vegetational bands are therefore related to the two most important climatic factors that most characterize the life of plants and which are:
– heat and temperature;
– rainfall.
The temperature and precipitation data are obtained from pluviometric diagrams which are graphs that are constructed according to the criterion of Gausse and Bagnouls, later modified by Walter and Lieth.

Below is a diagram of vegetational bands according to the Italian plant formations:
1. alpine meadows – alpine or alpine belt;
2. subalpine shrubs – subalpine or subalpic belt;
3. Alti-Mediterranean formations – Iranian-Nevada area;
4. oroboreal coniferous forests – oroboreal belt;
5. temperate coniferous forests – distributed in several bands;
6. beech woods – orosubatlantic and colchic belts;
7. mixed deciduous oak forests – southern Alpine, Po, sub-Mediterranean and supra-Mediterranean areas;
8. chestnut groves – distributed in several bands;
9. Mediterranean woods and scrubs – Mediterranean belt;
10. hygrophilous woods and shrubs – distributed in several bands.
