Cubebene

Cubebene is a molecule of natural origin present in the two forms α and β.
According to the official IUPAC nomenclature, the two forms respectively take the following names:
– (α): (1R, 5S, 6R, 7S, 10R) -4,10-dimethyl-7-propan-2-yltricycle [4.4.0.01,5] dec-3-ene;
– (β): (1R, 5S, 6R, 7S, 10R) -10-Methyl-4-methylidene-7-propan-2-yltricycle [4.4.0.01,5] decane.
Cubebene has a brute or molecular formula: C15H24 and is a sesquiterpene, isolated for the first time from the berries of the cubeb (Piper cubeba L. f.), also known as Java pepper, which is a plant of the Piperaceae family, widespread in Southeast Asia.
This plant is cultivated for its fruits, which are then dried to be used as spices and from which essential oils are obtained.
The volatile oil from the distillation of cubebs is a light green or blue-yellow viscous liquid with a warm woody, slightly camphoraceous odor; this oil is made up of cubebene in two forms, α- and β-cubebene.
The two forms of cubebene differ only in the position of a double bond which is endocyclic (part of the five-membered ring) in the α-cubebene but exocyclic in the β-cubebene.
