Tanshinone IIA (abbreviated to Tan IIA), whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 1,6,6-trimethyl-8,9-dihydro-7H-naphtho [1,2-g][1]benzofuran-10, 11-dione is a substance of natural origin present in some plants, including: Salvia miltiorrhiza, Salvia digitaloides and others.
Tanshinone IIA has molecular formula: C19H18O3 and is a component of the main lipophilic components extracted from the root of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, currently used in China and other neighboring countries to treat patients suffering from myocardial infarction (MI), angina pectoris, stroke , diabetes, sepsis and other conditions.
Tanshinone IIA induces apoptosis in HeLa cells, which make up a human cell line, through mitotic arrest.
However, tanshinone IIA is not easy to absorb through the intestine.
Research and trials have been conducted to increase the bioavailability of the herb, and in this direction the sodium IIA sulfonate tanshinone (STS) has been developed.
