Dammarane

Dammarane is an organic substance whose name in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: (1R, 3aR, 3bR, 5aS, 9aS, 9bR, 11aR) -1 – [(2R) -6-methileptan-2-il] -3a, 3b , 6,6,9a-pentamethylhexadecahydro-1H-cyclopenta [a] phenanthrene.
Dammarane has a brute or molecular formula: C30H54 and is a tetracyclic triterpene found in sapogenins (which form triterpene saponins) such as those of ginseng, present like other ginsenosides only in plants of the genus Panax.
These compounds are being researched, as they are believed to be the active ingredients to which the efficacy of ginseng would be attributable. Since ginsenosides appear to influence many metabolic pathways, their effects are complex and difficult to isolate.
Compounds from this series of substances were first isolated and named after dammar resin, a natural resin that comes from tropical trees of the Dipterocarp family.

Considerable economic resources are used on dammarane, as for other ginsenosides, for the interest that non-conventional medicinal remedies continue to feed, both in the United States and in the rest of the world. In this regard, it should be remembered that with annual sales of over 300 million dollars (between 15 and 20% of the US market), ginseng is one of the best-selling herbal substances in the United States.
