Conicein

Gamma-conicein, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 2, 3, 4, 5-tetrahydro-6-propylpyridine is an alkaloid of natural origin.
Conicein has a molecular formula: C8H15N.
In its pure state it is a colorless liquid with a distinct mouse odor and is volatile.
Gamma-conicein is slightly soluble in water, but easily soluble in ethanol, chloroform and ether.
The gamma-conicein, together with the conin are alkaloids analogous to nicotine, useful for plants to defend themselves from insects.
This alkaloid is contained, among the various plants, in the hemlock (Conium maculatum L., 1753).
Symptoms of hemlock poisoning are those of neurotoxins (salivation, muscle tremors, spasms, with eventually death from respiratory collapse).
