Piperonal

The piperonal whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 3,4- (methylene dixy) benzaldehyde 1,3-benzodioxol-5-carboxaldehyde, also known by the alternative names of heliotropin, piperonal and piperonyl aldehyde is an aromatic aldehyde with brute formula or molecular: C8H6O3.
Piperone is a minor component, however quite relevant in vanilla essential oil, which contributes to structuring the specific aroma of the pod and therefore obtainable from the Vanilla plant (Vanilla planifolia Jacks. Ex Andrews, 1808).

At room temperature, the piperonal presents itself as a white crystalline powder with a characteristic floral smell.
This substance is used, in perfumery, in the flavors of cherry and vanilla, in organic synthesis and as a component of mosquito repellents.
It is used as an intermediate, also in the synthesis of amphetamine drugs such as MDA and MDMA (Ecstasy).
