Iridomyrmecin

Iridomyrmecin

Iridomirmecin, whose brute or molecular formula is: C10H16O2 is a chemical substance produced by the anal glands of the ants of the genus Iridomyrmex, now reclassified as Linepithema. The best known of these ants is the Linepithema humile.
Iridomirmecin is chemically classified as an iridoid which is a bioterpene monoterpene starting from isoprene.
Iridoids are often intermediates in the biosynthesis of alkaloids.

Iridomirmecin is in effect a substance with antibacterial and insecticidal properties.
This substance, in nature, is processed by a variety of plants including Actinidia polygama.
In the past, research has also been carried out on the antagonism of iridomirmecin towards the oncogenic activity of colchicine and gammaesan on Lupinus albus.
