Orthosiphonine, whose term is composed of ortho- “ortho-” and the Greek word σίϕων “siphon” (extended to indicate the tube of the corolla) is a glycoside contained in the leaves of a plant of the labiate family (Orthosiphon aristatus (Blume ) Miq., 1858).
Orthosiphon aristatus, known as Java tea, is a species of perennial and medicinal plant, belonging to the genus Orthosiphon and to the Lamiaceae family. This plant is native to southern China, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia and tropical Queensland and is grown in Georgia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Australia.
Orthosiphonine appears as a white-yellowish crystalline substance, with a diuretic and antirheumatic action.
Orthosiphonine has an as yet undefined chemical composition; this substance has been reported and found by some authors but is still under investigation.
