How to make kiwi syrup
No special equipment is needed to prepare a kiwi syrup.
The process is quite simple and can be used in a variety of ways, as an addition to drinks, cocktails, desserts or as a natural sweetener for some recipes. Here’s how you can do it:
Ingredients:
– 4-5 ripe kiwis
– 1 cup of sugar
– 1 cup of water
– Juice of half a lemon (optional, to add a touch of acidity)
Instructions:
1. Preparation of the kiwis: Peel the kiwis and cut them into pieces. You can use a knife or peeler to remove the peel. The more kiwis you use, the more intense their presence in the syrup will be.
2. Preparation of the syrup: In a saucepan, pour the water and the sugar. Turn the stove to medium heat and stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Then bring the mixture to a boil. Once you reach boiling point, reduce the heat to medium-low.
3. Adding the Kiwis: Add the kiwi pieces to the pot containing the sugar syrup. Let them cook for about 10-15 minutes on medium-low heat. The kiwis will soften and release their flavor into the liquid.
4. Mashing the kiwis: With the help of a fork or an immersion blender, lightly mash the kiwi pieces in the pot. This will help to further extract the flavor and color from the kiwis.
5. Adding Lemon Juice: If you want a touch of tartness to balance out the sweetness of the syrup, you can add the juice of half a lemon to the pot. Mix well.
6. Syrup reduction: Let the mixture cook over medium-low heat for another 5 to 10 minutes, until the syrup has thickened slightly.
7. Cooling and Straining: Remove the pot from the heat and allow the syrup to cool for a few minutes. Afterward, you can strain the syrup through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove any unwanted kiwi bits.
8. Storage: Transfer the kiwi syrup to an airtight container or sterilized glass bottle. Let it cool completely before putting it in the refrigerator. The syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks.
You now have a homemade kiwi syrup that you can use to add a fresh, fruity flavor to your favorite drinks and recipes.
