Salvianolic acid B, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: (2R) -2 – [(E) -3 – [(2R, 3R) -3 – [(1R) -1-carboxy-2- (3 , 4-dihydroxyphenyl) ethoxy] carbonyl-2- (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) -7-hydroxy-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-4-yl] prop-2-enoyl] oxy-3- (3 , 4-dihydroxyphenyl) propanoic acid is a naturally occurring organic acid.
Salvianolic acid B has a brute or molecular formula: C36H30O16 and is a metabolite present in some plants such as: Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge and Salvia flava Forrest ex Diels.
Salvianolic Acid B is one of the main active components of Salvia Miltiorrhiza which, in China, is used in the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases and neoplastic disease.
Researchers from Howard University in the United States evaluated Salvianolic Acid B on the growth of two cell lines, JHU-022 and JHU-013 of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. The experiment was conducted in a mouse model.
As a result of laboratory research it was observed that the tumor volume in animals treated with salvianolic acid, and in which the tumor was implanted, was smaller than that of animals treated with an anti-inflammatory drug (Celecoxib) or not treated.
From these data it emerged that Salvianolic Acid B appears to be a promising anticancer agent targeting cyclooxygenase-2 in the prevention and treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.
