Miltirone, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 8,8-dimethyl-2-propan-2-yl-6,7-dihydro-5H-phenanthren-3,4-dione is an abietane-type quinone diterpene.
Miltirone has a brute or molecular formula: C19H22O2 and is a natural substance isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge but also present in other species.
Miltirone has been studied in the laboratory and research confirms that it possesses antitumor activity in human cancer cells in relation to p-glycoprotein (P-gp).
According to some studies, miltirone has a dual effect on P-gp inhibition and apoptotic induction in a human hepatoma cell line HepG2 and in its counterpart resistant to doxorubicin with overexpression of P-gp (R-HepG2).
In general, miltirone is a double inhibitor of P-gp and cell growth in drug-resistant human hepatoma cells.
The potential of this molecule leads us to consider its extraction from Salvia miltiorrhiza to be extremely important, together with other active ingredients present in this plant.
