Onocerin

Onocerin is a triterpene of natural origin.
Alpha-onokerine is a triterpene in which each carbon has been replaced by a (1R, 4aR, 6S, 8aS) -6-hydroxy-5,5,8a-trimethyl-2-methylenedecahydronaphthalen-1-yl group. It plays a role as a plant metabolite. It is a triterpenoid, a secondary alcohol, a diol and an olefin compound.
The term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: (2S, 4aR, 5S, 8aR) -5- [2 – [(1S, 4aR, 6S, 8aR) -6-hydroxy-5,5,8a-trimethyl-2-methylidene- 3,4,4a, 6, 7,8-hexahydro-1H-naphthalen-1-yl] ethyl] -1,1,4a-trimethyl-6-methylidene-3,4,5,7,8,8a-hexahydro -2H-naphthalen-2-ol.
Onocerin has a brute or molecular formula: C30H50O2.
Onocerin is contained in the root of the Ononis spinosa plant and in Lycopodium clavatum. The alpha form of this triterpene, isolated in L. clavatum, has been found to have a marked cholinesterase inhibitory action.
