Nimbidin

Nimbidin is a mixture of tetranortriterpenes and is the main active ingredient of Neem oil (Azadirachta indica A. Juss., 1830).
Nimbidin has a complex molecular form and possesses potent anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activities.
Recent research has highlighted that nimbidin significantly inhibits some of the functions of macrophages and neutrophils in response to inflammatory states following exposure both in vivo and in vitro.
Nimbidin also inhibits the production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages (LPS) after in vitro exposure, while interleukin 1 (IL-1) was only weakly inhibited.
In general, nimbidin, together with nimbin, also contained in Neem oil, has antiviral activity.
Nimbidin affects potato virus X, vaccinia virus and smallpox virus. They could perhaps open a way to control these and other viral diseases of crops and livestock.
Furthermore, nimbidin is the main component of the bitter principles obtained when neem seeds are extracted with alcohol. It occurs in considerable quantities, about 2%.
