Palmatine

Palmatine, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 2,3,9,10-tetramethoxy-5,6-dihydroisoquinoline [2,1-b] isoquinolin-7-ium is an alkaloid also known as Berbericinin.
This substance has a molecular formula: C21H22NO4 + and is one of the alkaloids contained in the pigeon root (Jateorhiza palmata (Lam.) Miers) and present in the drug obtained from it.
Palmatine is a protoberberal alkaloid which in addition to being contained in the pigeon root is also present in other plants such as:
– Phellodendron amurense Rupr .;
– Coptis chinensis Franch .;
– Corydalis yanhusuo W.T.Wang.
Palmatine is also the main component of the Enantia chlorantha protoberberine extract.
Palmatine is being studied for its potential use in the treatment of jaundice, dysentery, hypertension, inflammation and liver-related diseases. This compound also demonstrated weak activity against the flavivirus in vitro.
