5-hydroxytryptophan
5-hydroxytryptophan
5-hydroxytryptophan, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 2S-amino-3- (5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl) propanoic acid, is an amino acid obtained from tryptophan.
5-hydroxytryptophan, abbreviated with the term 5-HTP, has a brute or molecular formula: C11H12N2O3.
5-hydroxytryptophan is a naturally occurring substance extracted from the African bean plant (Griffonia simplicifolia (DC.) Baill.).
The importance of 5-hydroxytryptophan is attributable to the fact that this compound is a precursor of serotonin, a neurotransmitter of vital importance for the well-being of the whole organism. Serotonin is in fact involved in numerous biological functions, such as the regulation of mood, sleep, appetite and even sexual behavior.
5-HTP, as well as inside our body, is present, as mentioned, in large quantities within the seeds of the African bean, whose extracts are taken as a rich source of this particular compound.
5-hydroxytryptophan is available in various food supplements, both as it is, and in the form of Griffonia seed extract titrated and standardized in 5-HTP.
