Guvacine whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylic acid is a compound of natural origin.
Guvacine has a brute or molecular formula: C6H9NO2 and is an alkaloid present in the Betel palm (Areca catechu L., 1753), a palm native to the Philippines, widely cultivated even outside its basin of origin. It produces betel nut, which is used as stimulant in several Asian countries.
Guvacine is a pyridine alkaloid and is the N-demethylated derivative of arecaidine and the ester hydrolysis product of guvacoline, both also present in betel nuts. Guvacine is also a gamma-aminobutyric acid inhibitor.

Guvacine is currently an investigational drug with no approved indication. Experimental studies are still underway to determine all the physiological effects and mechanisms of action of guvacine. It has now been determined that this alkaloid is a specific inhibitor of GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) reuptake without significant affinity for GABA receptors.
