Achillein

Achillein, also known by the name of betonicin, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: L-4-hydroxyproline betaine; (2S, 4R) -4-hydroxy-1,1-dimethylpyrrolidinium-2-carboxylate; 4-hydroxy-stachhydrin is an alkaloid, of the pyrrolidine group, with brute or molecular formula: C7H13NO3.
Chemically, Achillein is an N, N-dimethylated derivative of the proteinogenic amino acid L-hydroxyproline.
Achillein is also known by the names of L-4-hydroxystachhydrin, L-betonicin and is a red-brown substance, soluble in water, with a bitter taste, present in some plants including those of the genus Achillea (such as Achillea millefeuille), in the common Betonica (Stachys officinalis L.) and in the Canavalia maritima (Canavalia rosea (Sw.) DC.).

Achillesin has anti-inflammatory properties and was used in the past as an ingredient in stomachic and purifying drinks.
Achilleina was found, for the first time, in the common Betonica, which led to the alternative name of Betonicina.
