Aconitic Acid

Aconitic Acid

Aconitic acid whose name in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: propen-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid, also known as 3-carboxypent-2-endioic acid, is an organic acid with brute or molecular formula C6H6O6.
Aconitic acid is present in the two isomers which are cis-aconitic acid and trans-aconitic acid. The conjugated base of cis-aconitic acid, cis-aconitated, is an intermediate in the isomerization of isocitrate citrate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle, a reaction catalyzed by the aconitase enzyme.

Aconitic acid owes its name to the fact that it is contained in a fairly high quantity in the aconite (Aconitum napellus L., 1753), a herbaceous plant of the Ranunculaceae family, as well as in other plants. Industrially it is prepared from citric acid for dehydration and is used in the preparation of synthetic resins.
