How to grow the Philodendron scadens

The Philodendron scandens, like other species of Philodendron, is a species of the Araceae family native to the tropical areas of the globe; the name of the genus is of Greek origin and derives from filos, friend, and dendros, tree, which means “that loves the tree”, and indicates the climbing habit of some species of the genus. To the genus belong more than 275 species of creeping and decumbent evergreen plants, climbing plants, erect with short stem and even semi-arborescent or epiphytic.
The Philodendron scandens is a rustic, climbing and very decorative plant with thin stems and leathery, pointed and evergreen coriaceous leaves, the plant is characterized by the presence of yellowish veins on the leaves.
In this sheet we see how to grow the Filodendro scadens and the most appropriate techniques for a longer stay in the apartment, considering that the techniques reported here apply to most of the philodendrons.
This plant must be grown in diffused light conditions but can not stand direct sunlight, it is also one of the apartment plants that better tolerate the lack of light and the indoor environment of our apartments.

The soil on which to grow it must be very organic and with a base, on the bottom of the pot, with highly draining material (perlite or very coarse gravel) to avoid water stagnation with care. In fact the substratum of the plant must be kept quite humid but without exceeding in the summer and with very reduced water supplies in winter.
The ideal conditions for the cultivation of philodendrons are the classic ones; in addition to the luminous position but without direct rays, temperatures between 16 and 24 ° C, peaty soil with a part of organic substance and fertilization with fertilizers for green plants once a month from April to September. The soil must be renewed every two or three years.
As for its reproduction, to breed new plants “homemade”, from May to September you can proceed to reproduction: it comes off a peak, it is placed in sandy loam moist and covered the jar with a sheet of plastic, to keep the humidity and the heat. The seedlings will be ready in spring.
Remember that the Philodendron should be periodically pruned both to give it its own form, both to contain the vegetative vigor and to bring the leaves closer to the stem.
This plant grows well on a special brace. The stem is rich in aerial roots with which it is still the guardian. It has a very fast growth.
The Philodendron does not tolerate the stale air and cigarette smoke despite this is particularly recommended as an indoor plant.
