Glycitein, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 7-hydroxy-3- (4-hydroxyphenyl) -6-methoxy-4-chromomenone is an isoflavone.
Glycitein has a brute or molecular chemical formula: C16H12O5.
This substance is an O-methylated isoflavone which accounts for 5-10% of the total isoflavones in soy food products (Glycine max (L.) Merr.), A herbaceous plant of the Fabaceae family, native to East Asia and grown for food purposes.
Glycitein is a phytoestrogen with weak estrogenic activity, comparable to that of other soy isoflavones.
At the level of human metabolism, glycitin (glycitein 7-O-glucoside) can be transformed into glycetein by the human intestinal flora.
