Tanshinone I, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 1,6-dimethylnaphto [1,2-g] [1] benzofuran-10,11-dione is a naturally occurring abietane diterpenoid.
Tanshinone I has a brute or molecular chemical formula: C18H12O3 and together with dihydrotanshinone I and tanshinone IIA is metabolized in some plants such as: Salvia sinica, Salvia densiflora and, above all, Salvia miltiorrhiza.
Tanshinone I was isolated from Salvia miltiorrhiza.
Research on Tanshinone I reveals its role as an anticoronaviral agent.
Tanshinone I is an anti-inflammatory and modulates or prevents breast cancer metastases by regulating adhesion molecules.
Research is being carried out on rats to understand the anti-inflammatory and anticarcinogenic potential of this molecule.
