Scutellarein is a flavonoid, an aglycone, whose term in the official IUPC nomenclature is: 5,6,7-Trihydroxy-2- (4-hydroxyphenyl) -4H-1-benzopyran-4-one.
Scutellarein is also known by the alternative names of: Isocartamidine and 6-hydroxyapigenin, 5,6,7,4′-tetrahydroxyflavone and has a brute or molecular formula: C15H10O6.
Scutellarein is a flavone which in groups C-4 ‘, -5, -6 and -7 possesses hydroxyl groups and is derived from apigenin and is a metablite.
Scutellarein is present in Scutellaria lateriflora L. and in Stachys italica Mill., An endemic species present mainly in southern and Sicilian Italy and also in central Italy.
It is also present in other species of the genus Scutellaria, as well as in the fern Asplenium belangeri.
Scutellarein is an aglycone present in Scutellaria lateriflora while its homologous scutellarine is a glycosidic flavone derived from Scutellaria barbata and Scutellaria lateriflora.
