Piperitone

Piperitone, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 6-isopropyl-3-methyl-1-cyclohex-2-enone is an organic compound found in some essential oils.
Piperitone has the molecular formula C10H16O and is, from a chemical point of view, a natural monoterpene ketone.
Both stereoisomers of piperitone are known, both the D form and the L form. The D form has a peppermint-like aroma and has been isolated from plant oils of the genera Cymbopogon, Andropogon and Mentha.
The L-shape was isolated from the Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bongard) Carrière, 1855).
The primary source, both of the D and L forms of piperitone, comes from some species of Eucalyptus, in particular the Mentholated Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus dives Schauer) produced mainly in South Africa.
Piperitone is used, especially as the main raw material for the production of synthetic menthol and thymol.
