Pulegone, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: (5R) -5-methyl-2- (propan-2-yliden) cyclohexan-1-one is a natural organic compound found in the essential oils of some plants.
Pulegone has the chemical formula: C10H16O and is a monoterpene.
This substance is present in some plants including some of the Lamiaceae family.
Among others it is present in the essential oils of Nepeta cataria and Mentha piperita.
From a physical point of view, pulegone is a clear colorless oily liquid, with a pleasant smell similar to mint, peppermint and camphor.
This molecule is used in flavoring agents, in perfumery and in aromatherapy.
In addition, pulegone has insecticidal effects and plays an important role as a repulsive for insects inside plants.
As for its toxicology, toxic effects have been reported for rats when consumed in large quantities.
