The essential oil of Juniper (Juniperus communis L.) is extracted by distillation in a stream of steam from green berries and young branches of juniper.
This oil is known for its many properties; in fact it is useful for the circulatory system and for the disorders including back pain or muscular pains.
For its anti-inflammatory properties, it is used with benefits against headaches, rheumatic pains, arthrosis, arthritis, gout and various osteoarticular inflammations.
The essential oil of Juniper is also relaxing and very relaxing for the muscular and tendinous system. It is often indicated especially for athletes after physical exertion and sporting activity, especially in case of tension, pain and backache and exhaustion.
Like other similar essential oils it is referred to as expectorant and anticatinal; inhaled by inhalation it is recommended in the treatment of respiratory diseases, even in cases of coughs and colds.
Juniper essential oil is specific for the genitourinary system performing an important antiseptic, anti-infective and antibacterial action for the urinary tract. In some cases it is indicated to improve diuresis and also used in cases of cystitis, edema, lymphatic stasis and water retention; for this reason the essential oil of Juniper is also prescribed for cellulite.
Finally, it is interesting to know how the so-called Juniper berries or galbuli are widely used both in cooking and in liquor. In some kitchens they are an essential aroma for game and, often, for various roasts. Distillates are the characterizing ingredient of gin; they also produce aromatic wines and liqueurs and a juniper brandy, leaving a handful of pampering infusions (about 50 g per liter) into the grappa.
Juniper essential oil is also known for its detoxifying properties. It helps cleanse the body by promoting the elimination of toxins through increased urination. It also supports liver function and improves digestion. Use it in aromatherapy, diluted in a carrier oil, or add a few drops to a bath for detoxification benefits.
