Verbascoside

Verbascoside or acetoside is a phenylpropanoid and a sugar ester of caffeic acid.
Verbascoside has a brute or molecular formula: C29H36O15 and is a naturally occurring substance in some plants such as in orange mullein (Verbascum phlomoides L.) and in red mullein (Verbascum mallophorum Boiss. & Heldr.)
However, this substance can also be produced in Leucosceptrum spp. Plant cell cultures. and Syringa spp ..
Verbascoside derivatives can be found in various species of Verbascum spp. as in Verbascum undulatum Lam ..
Verbascoside has an antimicrobial activity which is expressed in particular against Staphylococcus aureus. It can also have anti-inflammatory properties.
Among other activities, it manifests a genotoxic profile on lymphocytes due to the involvement of PARP-1 and p53 proteins. It is a protein kinase C and aldose reductase inhibitor; it also possesses immunomodulatory and antitumor as well as hypertensive and anti-hepatoxic activity and also pain reliever in neuropathic pain.
In general it plays a neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial role.
Verbascoside is being tested in clinical study NCT02662283 (Validity and safety of Acteoside Reh therapy for patients with IgA nephropathy).
