Narceine, whose term in the official IUPAC nomenclature is: 6 – ({6- [2- (Dimethylamino) ethyl] -4-methoxy-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl} acetyl) -2,3-dimethoxybenzoic acid , is a substance that belongs to the category of alkaloids.
Narceine has a brute or molecular formula: C23H27NO8 and is an isoquinoline alkaloid contained in opium that is produced by the Opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum L., 1753). It should be remembered that morphine is mainly obtained from this plant with psycholeptic properties due to the action of various alkaloids.
The term narceina comes from the Greek νάρκη (nárkē) which means torpor.
Narceine is in fact a substance with a weak narcotic action and spasmolytic action.
