Mangiferin
Mangiferin
Mangiferin, whose name in the official IUPAC terminology is: (1S)-1,5-anhydro-1-(1,3,6,7-tetrahydroxy-9-oxo-9H-xanthen-2-yl)-D- glucitol, is a substance of natural origin with a brute or molecular formula: C19H18O11.
Mangiferin is, in turn, a compound derived from xanthone, a compound that is very widespread in nature and present in particular in plants belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, such as mango (Mangifera indica L., 1753).
Mangiferin is a polyphenol which, in fact, naturally, is extracted from the Mangifera indica plant and is a molecule that is extracted from the leaves, fruits and terminal twigs of the plant.
With natural extraction, other polyphenols are also extracted, associated with trace elements, iron, copper and selenium, polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamins.
Due to the properties of manghiferin, it is used as a natural drug, in traditional medicine and in food supplements.
This extract has antioxidant properties such as to surprisingly counteract the aging processes of the organism.
In general, mangiferin has numerous health properties, among which the antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-allergic, anti-cancer, hypocholesterolemic and immunomodulatory properties stand out. Its effects include suppression of tumor necrosis factor-α expression and induction of apoptosis. The compound is also able to block lipid peroxidation.
In fact, the complex of polyphenols present exerts an effective protective effect against oxidative damage from free radicals. Furthermore, mangiferin has a high bioavailability which allows it to reach the tissues and organs in a significant way.
Mangiferin presents in its structural formula as many as 8 hydroxyl groups (OH) available, and this allows to prevent, repair and protect the human body against damage from free radicals (H), binding them to form a water molecule (H2O ) easily eliminated from the body, with a much higher potency than other substances which have at most 2 hydroxyl groups (OH) available.
Studies and clinical research on mangiferin have confirmed its efficacy in improving the quality of life in patients suffering from certain types of cancer, psoriasis, diabetes mellitus, benign prostatic hyperplasia, bronchial asthma and polyneuropathy. In the last four pathologies, remission of the clinical symptoms was achieved in some cases. There is also evidence of its action as an inhibitor of skin aging.
Among the other properties of this molecule, it is emphasized that we have evident results in the treatment of pain (arthralgia, osteoarthritis and muscle pain) in the treatment of skin diseases such as herpes zoster and bedsores.
