Etymology –
The term Dalbergia is named after the Swedish botanist and physician Nils Dalberg. Naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg established the genus in his honor.
The specific epithet melanoxylon derives from the Ancient Greek: μέλας (mélas) = ​​”black” and ξύλον (xýlon) = “wood”.
The literal meaning is therefore “with black wood” or “with black wood,” a clear reference to the species’ extremely dark heartwood.

Geographic Distribution and Habitat –
Dalbergia melanoxylon is a plant native to tropical regions of Africa characterized by a long dry season. Its natural range extends from Senegal and Eritrea to Mozambique and northeastern South Africa, including much of East Africa. In the past, its distribution was even wider, extending from Ethiopia to eastern South Africa, but today the species occupies a more limited territory due to the intense exploitation of natural populations.
The plant grows in a wide variety of environments, from savannahs to mixed deciduous forests, through semi-arid areas and tropical plains, ranging from sea level to about 1,200 meters above sea level. It is also common on rocky and dry terrain, although it prefers locations with good light exposure and sufficient water availability, so much so that it is often associated with watercourses. It adapts to numerous soil types, from sandy loams to clayey soils rich in expansive clays.
Outside of Africa, it was introduced to India and Australia, where it became naturalized; however, in Western Australia, it became an invasive species and was subsequently eradicated. Cultivation experiences in Florida have also shown that, under favorable conditions, it can develop larger trees and produce particularly high-quality timber.

Description –
Dalbergia melanoxylon is a small, deciduous tree, heavily branched and often with thorny branches. It generally reaches a height of 4 to 7.5 meters, although larger specimens can reach about 15 meters.
The bark is gray, while the crown takes on a rounded, irregular shape. During the dry season, it completely loses its leaves, which are alternate, pinnate, and composed of six to nine leaflets. It produces small white flowers clustered in dense inflorescences, followed by pods a few centimeters long, usually containing one or two seeds.
However, the characteristic that makes this species famous is its wood. The heartwood ranges in color from very dark red-purple to deep black, while the sapwood is clearly distinct and yellowish-white. The wood is extremely hard, heavy, compact, and slightly oily; it also possesses extraordinary dimensional stability and exceptional resistance to moisture, fungi, and insects. Although its hardness makes working difficult and causes rapid tool wear, it produces perfectly smooth and shiny surfaces. During turning, it develops a pleasant rose-like scent.

Cultivation –
Dalbergia melanoxylon thrives in warm tropical climates, where the average annual temperature ranges between 18 and 35°C and rainfall averages 700–1,200 mm per year. It requires bright environments and does not tolerate intense shade, which is why natural regeneration is limited in very dense forests.
This species grows particularly slowly: a seven-year-old tree reaches barely four meters in height, and it takes seventy to one hundred years for the trunk to become suitable for commercial timber production. For this reason, Dalbergia melanoxylon is considered one of the rarest and most expensive wood species in the world.
Although this tree adapts to numerous soil types, as mentioned, it grows slowly and requires many decades to reach a size suitable for timber production. Mature trees are fire-resistant and have the ability to re-grow from the stump and produce root suckers. Like many Fabaceae, it also establishes a symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria present in the soil, thus helping to enrich it with nitrogen.
Propagation occurs primarily through seed. The seeds germinate easily without special treatment, although a brief soaking in water can accelerate the process. Young seedlings are initially kept in the shade and then exposed to the sun. In Tanzania, it has been observed that the use of two-year-old stumps significantly improves rooting, while seedlings grown in pots require frequent root pruning to avoid stunted growth.
Even after felling, the wood requires special care: it must be seasoned and dried very slowly to avoid cracking. Once this process is complete, it maintains remarkable dimensional stability and retains its characteristics even with fluctuations in ambient humidity.

Uses and Traditions –
This species, commonly known as African blackwood, is one of the hardest and densest woods in the world, highly prized for making wind instruments (clarinets, oboes, bagpipes) and for cabinetmaking.
It is known by numerous common names, including African Blackwood, Mpingo, Grenadilla, Grenadille, and Babanus. In the past, it was often incorrectly called Pharaoh’s Ebony, a name now considered inaccurate since true ebony trees belong to the Diospyros genus, not the Dalbergia genus.
Dalbergia melanoxylon is one of Africa’s most prized woods and has been prized since ancient times. According to several accounts, its wood was already used in ancient Egypt for the creation of luxury furniture, and in later periods, it was even used as ballast on merchant ships due to its heavy weight.
Today, its primary use is in the construction of high-quality wind instruments, such as clarinets, oboes, flutes, piccolos, recorders, and bagpipes. Its high density, dimensional stability, and excellent acoustic properties make this wood one of the most sought-after materials by luthiers. It is also used in the production of fine furniture, exclusive parquet flooring, knife handles, traditional African sculptures, turned objects, inlays, chess pieces, and numerous artistic artifacts. In China, it is included among the species used in the production of traditional Hongmu furniture, particularly prized for its historical and cultural value.
In addition to its artisanal uses, the tree plays a significant role in traditional African medicine and in agroforestry systems, where it is used to consolidate soil, limit erosion, create windbreaks, and improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
High commercial demand, combined with the extremely slow growth of the species, has led to the progressive depletion of natural populations. Dalbergia melanoxylon is currently classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List and is the subject of numerous conservation and reforestation programs, often accompanied by FSC certification to promote sustainable forest management.

Preparation and Use –
Various parts of the plant are used in traditional African medicine. The roots are considered vermifuge and aphrodisiac and are used in decoction form to prevent miscarriages and treat abdominal pain, diarrhea, gonorrhea, and syphilis. The bark is also widely used: prepared in decoction or powdered, it is applied to cleanse and promote wound healing, while combined with baobab or tamarind fruits, it is used as a remedy for diarrhea. The leaves are administered in decoction to relieve joint pain, and their sap is used for mouth and throat inflammation. The smoke produced by burning the wood is inhaled in folk medicine as a remedy for headaches, colds, and bronchitis. Studies reported in the sources also indicate that bark extracts possess antibacterial and antifungal properties, at least partially confirming their traditional uses.
Technologically, the wood requires a long seasoning and slow drying before it can be worked. Once stabilized, it can be turned, polished, and finished with excellent results, a characteristic that has made it successful in the production of musical instruments, works of art, and luxury furniture. Thanks to its extremely high calorific value, it is also used as fuel and for the production of charcoal.
