The long journey of citrus fruits: origins, distribution, and cultivation techniques in the Mediterranean

Citrus fruits, now essential to Mediterranean fruit growing, are the result of a complex evolutionary and cultural process that originated in the subtropical forests of East Asia and developed through millennia of domestication, trade, and agronomic innovation. Their presence in Europe is not spontaneous: it is the result of a human-led botanical migration, which led these species to settle in climatically favorable environments, yet profoundly different from their native ones.
Modern genetic studies have confirmed that the great variability of cultivated citrus fruits descends primarily from three ancestral species: Citrus medica (citron), C. maxima (pomelo), and C. reticulata (tangerine). These species, through a combination of evolutionary divergence, natural hybridization, and anthropogenic selection, gave rise to almost all the forms known today, including the bitter orange, the sweet orange, and the lemon. This genetic complexity explains the extraordinary morphological and aromatic diversity that characterizes the Citrus genus.
The first documented contact of citrus fruits with Europe was with the citron, introduced between the 5th and 4th centuries BC through contact between the Greek world and the Persian Empire. During this period, the plant was not widely cultivated: it was kept in aristocratic gardens, primarily for ornamental or ceremonial purposes. Roman authors mention the citron primarily for its fragrance and certain medicinal uses, confirming its limited but culturally significant distribution.
The turning point in European citrus growing history, however, came in the Middle Ages, when Islamic rulers introduced to the western Mediterranean not only new species, such as lemon and bitter orange, but above all sophisticated agronomic techniques. Citrus fruits are plants with high water needs and a shallow root system, particularly sensitive to drought. Therefore, their cultivation requires regular and continuous irrigation systems. The Arabs brought advanced hydraulic technologies to the western Mediterranean, such as qanats—slightly sloping underground tunnels designed to tap groundwater and mountain water—and networks of diversion canals (saje), norias, and cisterns for water distribution and storage. These infrastructures allowed for the controlled diffusion of humidity and enabled citrus fruit to adapt to regions that, while thermally favorable, suffered from marked seasonality.
In Sicily, in particular, the soil and climate conditions proved ideal: mild winters, hot summers, abundant groundwater, and soils often of volcanic origin, rich in minerals such as potassium, iron, and magnesium. Beginning in the 10th century, citrus fruits spread to the Conca d’Oro near Palermo and later to the plains of Catania and Milazzo, where they were grown in gardens enclosed by perimeter walls that protected the foliage from the wind and helped stabilize the ambient humidity. Irrigation was primarily by flow in basins or channels that distributed water directly to the roots, following regular geometric patterns.
The sweet orange, today the most widely cultivated citrus species in the world, arrived in Europe much later than the lemon and bitter orange. Its introduction is attributed to Portuguese navigators in the 15th century, who imported it from the subtropical regions of China. The fruit’s greater sweetness quickly facilitated its diffusion and the selection of numerous cultivars. In Sicily, the particular conditions of the Catania Plain favored the appearance of pigment mutations due to the accumulation of anthocyanins, giving rise to the famous blood oranges.
Cultivation techniques have evolved over time, but many modern practices retain the structural foundations inherited from Arab tradition. Today, drip irrigation and micro-irrigation have replaced flow systems, allowing for more efficient water management and improved vegetative response. The training systems have also evolved: alongside the traditional vase or globe systems, smaller canopies and denser planting distances are now being adopted, designed to facilitate the mechanization of cultivation operations.
The history of citrus fruits in Europe is thus an exemplary case of the integration of biology, agronomy, and culture. From the processes of Asian domestication to medieval hydraulic innovations, up to modern irrigation management techniques, each phase has contributed to shaping not only citrus cultivation, but also the landscape and economy of entire Mediterranean regions. When we observe a citrus grove in bloom today, we see the result of a long evolutionary journey and a continuous interaction between humans and the environment, capable of transforming tropical species into a key element of Mediterranean agricultural identity.
