How to grow stridoli
The swollen silene (Silene vulgaris (Moench) Garcke) is a herbaceous species of 60-70 cm, maximum 100 cm, perennial and glabrous, with the characteristic flowers called “bubbolini”, of the family Caryophyllaceae. It is a spontaneous plant very common in Italy, known by many different names (stridoli, cannateddi, bubbolini, pigeon goiter, etc.) and has always had a vast food tradition; for this reason it deserves to be included among interesting horticultural crops. In this sheet we will see how to grow it and the most suitable agronomic measures ..
Silene vulgaris is a plant with dry, slightly acidic soils (pH 4.5-7.5) with low amounts of nutrients. Very rustic and resistant to low temperatures, it prefers partial shade exposures.
The Silene vulgaris propagates by seed. For this we must take into account the flowering that occurs from March to August. The resulting fruits are capsules containing many seeds. These can be kept and re-seeded the following year.
To grow and reach its maximum development, it takes an average of 2-5 years. The species has semi-persistent leaves. Cultivation can take place in: informal garden, gravel garden, Mediterranean garden, pot or container, architectural garden, terrace or courtyard, rock garden, lawn or open field, flower garden, country garden, coastal garden, sub-tropical garden . It is a plant that adapts well to many environments and substrates.
Watering is not so frequent a task to do. Although it is important to respect its needs regarding sun exposure it is good to provide a place where the plant is well exposed. As far as the care the plant needs is concerned, it can certainly be said that it does not have particular needs. It can therefore grow without constant control unlike other plants.
Like all alimurgical plants it is good not to allocate many treatments to this plant but to prepare marginal areas of our company that can contribute to small income and / or feed supplements.
The removal of young jets does not ruin the seedling that re-rolls easily and continuously. Having found the right source for their supplies, it is good to remember the place and do not eradicate it in order to always have fresh vegetables.
